Single-ply roofing is composed of a single layer thermoplastic or thermo-set membrane which typically has heat-welded seams. Single-ply systems include EPDM, PVC, TPO, and other hybrid systems including highly reflective white membranes. TAG Commercial Roofing is licensed for both installation and service by quality roof membrane manufacturers.
Thermoset membranes incorporate principal polymers that are chemically linked or vulcanized. Membranes that are vulcanized also may be referred to as “cured.” One characteristic of true thermoset polymers is once they are cured, they only can be bonded to similar materials with adhesives. The most common thermoset membrane is EPDM. EPMD is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane widely used in low-slope buildings in the U.S. and worldwide.
EPDM principally is composed of two compounds, ethylene, and propylene, that are derived from oil and natural gas. EPDM roof membranes can be installed fully adhered, mechanically attached (using batten bars) or ballasted. Most EPDM membranes do not receive surfacing.
In the single-ply roofing market, PVC roofing membranes offer an impressive set of advantages, unmatched by competitors. Among the most notable benefits are strength, durability, resistance to moisture, wind, fire, and chemicals. PVC sheets are produced by calendaring, spread coating or extruding, and typically reinforced with polyester or glass-fiber mats or scrim. PVC sheets contain plasticizers and stabilizers, as well as other additives to impart flexibility and achieve other desired physical properties. PVC membranes are produced in numerous colors, though gray and white are the most commonly used.
If you’ve been thinking about a “cool roof” for a while, Thermoplastic Olefin, better known as TPO, membranes are one of the fastest-growing commercial roofing systems around. When the roof is cooler – naturally, the interior of your property remains cooler. White TPO reflects harsh sun-rays instead of absorbing them so you will spend less money keeping your building cool during the hot summer months.
White TPO meets or often exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star specifications. In addition to energy savings, TPO is 100% recyclable and as an added bonus, TPO’s combination of green benefits can also help you meet your LEED point objectives and potentially qualify you for tax credits in certain regions.
TPO roofing membranes are manufactured from ethylene propylene rubber. Manufacturers utilize advance technology to chemically bind propylene, ethylene, rubber, and other filler materials together. This results in a single-ply roofing membrane with excellent durability and strength.
TPO owes its popularity to ease of installation, environmental friendliness, versatility while providing reduced cooling costs and energy savings for facilities located in warm climates. TPO is a cost-effective solution for both new roofs and re-roofing projects, and with minimal maintenance requirements, white TPO just might be the right choice for your next multifamily or commercial flat roofing project.
